In the days when Pirates roamed the seven seas, No Quarter would be given. To give no quarter means to show no mercy, to award no clemency. Many pirates used to hoist the Black Flag to signify no quarter would be given; the hourglass, cutlass and angel wings were used by pirates to indicate resistance meant death.
The hourglass symbolised your time was up, While the cutlass symbolized death, the black background meant that bloodshed wasn’t necessary if his enemies surrendered peacefully.
